Breast cancer is cancer that starts in the tissue of breast.They are normally two types of breast cancer. Ductal cancer that start in tube that move milk from breast to nipple and lobular cancer which starts in lobules that produce milk.

Causes or risk that expose you to get breast cancer are:

a) Age and gender -women get breast cancer 100 times more than men.As you get older your chances of getting cancer increases

b) Family history of breast cancer -it is important to study your family tree and know danger you are exposed to,if a relative has had breast ,ovarian or colon cancer you have high risk of getting breast cancer.

c) Genes - if you have gene prone to developing breast cancer such BRCA2,which normally produce protein that protect cancer.If it is passed to you by your parent ,then you have high risk of getting cancer in your life time.

d) Menstrual cycle - For those women who get their period early before age of 12yrs or went to menopause late after age of 55yrs,have increased risk to get breast cancer.

e) Alcohol use - Excessive drinking like taking more than two glasses of alcohol subjects you to higher risk of cancer.

f) Childbirth - Women who have never had children or who get them at their thirties.statistics show that women who become pregnant more than once or at an early age reduce risk of getting cancer.

g) DES - If you take diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriage you may have an increased risk of breast cancer after in your forties.

h) Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - You have a higher risk for breast cancer if you have received hormone replacement therapy for long.Most women use it to reduce the symptoms of menopause.

i) Obesity -Being overweight increases you chance to get breast cancer.The fact behind that is, obese women produce more estrogen, which can enhance the development of breast cancer.

j) Radiation - If you have received radiation therapy in your life time as a child or as you grow to treat cancer of the chest area.The younger you start such radiation, the higher your risk - more so if the radiation was given when a female was developing breasts

Breast Cancer Symptoms



Breast cancers in their early stages are usually painless. Often the first symptom is the discovery of a hard lump. Fifty percent of such masses are found in the upper outer quarter of the breast. The lump may make the affected breast appear elevated or asymmetric. The nipple may be retracted or scaly. Sometimes the skin of the breast is dimpled like the skin of an orange. In some cases there is a bloody or clear discharge from the nipple. Many cancers, however, produce no symptoms and cannot be felt on examination. They can be detected only with a mammogram.


What to look out for

Changes that could be due to a breast cancer are

• A lump or thickening in an area of the breast

• A change in the size or shape of a breast

• Dimpling of the skin

• A change in the shape of your nipple, particularly if it turns in, sinks into the breast or becomes irregular in shape

• A blood-stained discharge from the nipple

• A rash on a nipple or surrounding area

• A swelling or lump in your armpit



Like breast lumps, these signs don't necessarily mean cancer. Inverted nipples, blood stained nipple discharge or a rash can all be due to other medical conditions. But if any of these things happen to you, you should get it checked out. It may be nothing and seeing the GP will put your mind at rest. It may be a benign condition that can easily be treated. Or at the very worst, if you have a cancer you give yourself the best chance of successful treatment by going to the doctor early on.



If you spot a lump and notice anything unusual about your breast, please see your doctor straight away. Make sure you check your breast monthly and it should include visual inspection (with and without a mirror) to note any changes in contour or texture, and manual inspection in standing and reclining positions to note any unusual lumps or thicknesses.

Breast Cancer- Top Ten Things Every Woman Should Know

Breast cancer is a reality many women will have to deal with. Statistics show that one woman out of nine will develop breast cancer in her life. Whether it be a dear friend, a close family member or herself, every woman will be touched by breast cancer in one way or the other. Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all cancers.

Every woman should be aware of the risk factors and change those she can to lower her risk of developing breast cancer in her life.

Women who are not active physically, smoke or consume a lot of alcohol are at higher risk to develop breast cancer.

Women who have their first child at a later age or have never given birth are at higher risk to develop breast cancer.

Women who had their first period at an earlier age (less than 12 years old) are at higher risk for breast cancer.

Woman who have close family members who had develop breast cancer are at higher risk for themselves.

Women who are older. The further a woman advances in life, the higher her probability of developing breast cancer.

Women who experience a late menopause (after 55 years old) have an increase risk of developing breast cancer.

There is hope however and certain measures have proven to help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer for a woman. It is recommended to exercise regularly, lose any excess weight, lower alcohol consumption and stop smoking. It is also proven that women who breastfeed their babies are at lower risks to develop breast cancer.

Certain measures, by finding breast cancer at an earlier stage can lower the complication rate and morbidity associated with this condition. The two most recommended measures are to do a mammogram exam every two years after the age of 50 (or earlier if a woman has risk factors) and doing a breast self-examination. It is also recommended for a woman to visit her doctor regularly. One has to know that about two thirds of breast tumours are found by the woman herself upon doing her self-examination.

Many organizations and industries have joined forces to push back breast cancer and one can only encourage them by donating time or money for this worthy cause. There are many researches on breast cancer conducted worldwide and it is expected that the near future will see the decline of this devastating affliction.

Natural Self Defense Against Breast Cancer - Learning to Cope with Organochlorine Pollution

What are organochlorines?

Organochlorines are chemicals found in some herbicides and pesticides, in chlorine bleach and most chemical disinfectants, and many plastics, especially PVC (polyvinylchloride).

Organochlorines are implicated in causing and promoting breast cancer because they mutate genes and they cause breast cells to become more receptive to a cancer-promoting chemical called estradiol. Organochlorines weaken the immune system and lower your body’s resistance to bacteria and viruses. They also act as a negative type of estrogen in the body.

How do they enter our bodies?

Organochlorines enter our bodies through our drinking water, by eating foods grown with certain agricultural chemicals, and through the plastic linings on canned or microwaveable foods. They enter through our lungs by breathing in the fumes of chlorine bleach disinfectants and by body contact with chlorine bleached paper products such as tampons, toilet paper and paper cups.

How can we reduce our exposure?

Step One-Reduce Your Exposure

The first thing to do is to reduce your plastic consumption, especially of convenience foods. On plastic containers, there is typically a triangle with a number inside of it on the bottom of the container. You can recognize PVC or polyvinylchloride as the type of plastic that has a 3 in the center of the triangle.

As for paper products, use oxygen bleached or unbleached paper products. Companies who sell non-chlorine bleached paper products typically say so on the label and they do not necessarily market their products as “green” products.

Buy the non-chlorine bleach and more environmentally friendly household products. Simple vinegar and water can be used for many household chores.

Eating only organically produced meat and dairy products will reduce the amount of organochlorines in your diet by 80%.

Step Two-Help Your Liver

With help, your liver can metabolize organochlorines.

Flaxseeds and organic egg yolks contain lecithin, a chemical that speeds up the elimination of fat-soluble chemicals such as organochlorines by making them water-soluble.

Beans, lentils, red clover, soy products and chickweed contain chemicals called saponins. Saponins help to break down organochlorines, prevent cellular mutation and can stop the reproduction of cancer cells. These foods are strongly recommended for anybody who regularly consumes organochlorines.

Members of the cabbage family including broccoli, kale, turnips, radishes, cabbage, bok choy or cauliflower can help you metabolize organochlorines by increasing the production of non-cancerous by-products.

Step Three-Mother Nature’s Help

Woman-positive natural sources of estrogen can block entrance of organochlorines, estradiol and other cancer promoting estrogens when enough of them are in the blood stream. The reason behind this is that these positive hormones move quickly through our bodies whereas the cancer producing chemicals such as organochlorines move more slowly. If there are enough of these plant hormones in the blood stream, they can easily block organochlorines from attaching themselves to breast cells and from promoting cancer.

These plant hormones can be found in lentils, dried beans, tofu and fermented soy products such as tempeh and miso, parsnips, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, burdock roots, red clover, hops and ginseng. Regular intake of broccoli and cabbage is also helpful.
